Molluscum-pesky little guys

Do you know what molluscum is?

If you do it is probably a) because you have worked at a dermatologist’s office.  b) you have had a kid who has had it  c) and they are so pesky that your kid still has them.

What is molluscum?

It is an infection caused by a poxvirus.  It is usually a mild skin disease with round, firm, painless bumps ranging in size.  They usually disappear on their own.

How do they get it?

It is a common viral skin infection.

Is it contagious?

It is contagious because it is a virus.  It lives mainly on the top layer of the skin but once it is cleared up the virus is gone.

My middle daughter got them in preschool. They were up and down her inner thigh and in her groin area.  They weren’t too bothersome except they seemed to keep popping up. So thinking it was the best thing, I took her to the dermatologist.  They have a concoction called beetle juice (it is derived from the blister beetle), that they use a qtip to apply a tiny to each of the larger spots.  They did give us a warning that they may swell up and boy did they! She woke up in the middle of the night crying with each of the spots huge and filled.   Poor thing, I felt so horrible.  So after a few days they each popped on their own and those spots eventually healed but each one left her a scar. Boo.

Then my youngest daughter started to get them, I decided to try and find another solution than the beetle juice. I also thought that with quarantine and being at home for school now, I thought they would just heal up on their own. That was last March and she still had them.  So I decided to try and find something else and I found Molluscum Away-Microneedle patches.  She had a really big spot on her back that was starting to irritate her, that was the first one we used the patch on.  It literally cleared up in 24 hours! It is best to wait for the patch to fall off on its own.  So no baths for the kiddos, showers are best and probably not a super long time in there.

How to apply patches?

Carefully peel off the patch from the sheet and don’t touch the micro needles. Apply to spot and press down on the center of the patch for a count of 10 or longer.

She has a few clusters and a few other spots that we are currently working to clear up! I am very happy with the quick results we have had so far.  Way better than beetle juice or (other serum).  It’s best to buy 2-3 packs because each pack has 9 patches.
